South Africa plans to launch a tender for the development of its largest 1.5GW Tubatse pumped storage project

South African engineering news website reported on October 13 that Eskom, South Africa's national power utility, recently released the documents for the first phase, namely the Request for Qualification (RFQ), intending to select strategic partners to jointly develop the 1.5 GW Tubatse Pumped Storage Power Station Project in Limpopo Province with its independent green power development subsidiary Eskom Green. The bid submission deadline is November 30, and the project Q&A and clarification meeting will be held on October 29. After the completion of the first-phase bidding, the second-phase bidding, namely the Request for Proposal (RFP) for official project implementation, will also be launched. This project is not only the largest pumped storage project in South Africa to date, but also one of the 12 strategic integrated projects listed by South Africa. It plans to add an energy storage capacity of about 21 GWh through four reversible pump-turbine units. At present, South Africa has pumped storage power stations including Ingula, Drakensberg and Palmiet, with a total installed capacity of about 2.7 GW. Eskom stated that the required land is now ready, environmental permits have been approved, and the Department of Water and Public Health has also confirmed that the De Hoop Dam related to the project has sufficient water volume. Positive progress has also been made in grid connection and technical research, and the design of access roads has also been improved.
