Trump officially signed an order to raise the tariff from 25% to 50%! The steel and aluminum tariffs have officially taken effect.
On June 3rd, Eastern Time, Trump officially signed an order announcing that the tariffs on steel, aluminum, and their derivative products imported from all countries/regions would be raised from 25% to 50%.
The order will take effect at 00:01 on June 4th, 2025, Eastern Time (corresponding to 12:01 noon on June 4th, 2025, Beijing Time). Except for British goods, a 50% tariff rate shall apply to goods from all countries/regions.
The tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the UK by the United States will remain at 25%. The Section 232 tariffs on such imports will maintain an ad - valorem rate of 25%.
Starting from July 9th, 2025, the United States may adjust the applicable tariff rates and set import quotas for steel and aluminum in accordance with the provisions of the "Environmental Policy Statement". If the UK is found not to comply with the relevant provisions of the "Environmental Policy Statement", the applicable tariff rate may be raised to 50%. Meanwhile, the U.S. Customs has announced the "melting and casting" rule: the origin of the metal is determined by the location of its initial melting and casting, regardless of the location of subsequent processing.
That is, if steel and aluminum products are smelted and cast in the United States, even if they are further processed in other countries, their derivative products are not subject to additional tariffs and are applicable to a 0% tariff.
In addition, aluminum and its derivative products from Russia, or aluminum products smelted/cast in Russia, will continue to be subject to an additional 200% tariff.
