BRICS Join Forces to Build a New Chapter — BRICS Special Economic Zones Cooperation Exchange Event Held in Beijing
On June 26, the BRICS Special Economic Zones Cooperation Exchange Meeting was held in Beijing. The event was co-hosted by the BRICS Special Economic Zones China Cooperation Center and the Beijing Office of the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, and organized by the Zhejiang Provincial Investment Promotion Center. Leading officials from the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Commerce, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce, and the Beijing Office of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Chen Zhiyang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Commerce, Chen Zhicheng, Deputy Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce, Xie Shouhua, Deputy Director of the Beijing Office of the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, Danbazau, Nigerian Ambassador to China, Khaled Miled, Plenipotentiary Minister of the Egyptian Embassy in China, and Matthew Stephenson, CEO of the World Free Zones Organization, delivered speeches respectively. The Secretariat of the BRICS Center presented its work, the Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce and Hangzhou Qiantang New District made presentations on local economic and trade cooperation, and representatives of key special economic zones including Jiaxing Yuantong Global Air Logistics Hub and Suzhou Industrial Park gave exchange introductions respectively.
During the roundtable dialogue session, guests from the Green Development Alliance of National Economic and Technological Development Zones, China Bonded Zone and Export Processing Zone Association, Central Asia Office of the World Free Zones Organization, Commercial Representative Office of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation in China, Zhoushan Municipal Government, and Strans Group conducted in-depth discussions on the experience and paths of special economic zone cooperation under the theme of "Taking Special Economic Zones as the Carrier to Strengthen BRICS Economic and Trade Cooperation".
The event also specially invited diplomatic envoys of BRICS countries in China and representatives of investment promotion agencies from Russia, Brazil, Indonesia and other countries to attend the scene. More than 150 guests from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant industry associations, multinational corporations, special economic zones, and think tank experts participated in this meeting.
During the meeting, the participating guests shared the mature experience of the construction of special economic zones at home and abroad, conducted full exchanges on park construction, trade and investment, industrial coordination, mutual recognition of standards, green and low-carbon and other fields, and reached extensive consensus on deepening pragmatic economic and trade cooperation in multiple fields.
In the next stage, the BRICS Center will focus on building a cooperation network, creating an exchange platform, and promoting economic and trade cooperation, strive to be a facilitator of "BRICS Plus Cooperation", work hand in hand with all parties, and contribute to jointly promoting the innovative cooperation and sustainable development of BRICS special economic zones and realizing the high-quality development of "BRICS Plus Cooperation".

In October 2024, at the 16th BRICS Summit, President Xi Jinping announced that China will establish the BRICS Special Economic Zones China Cooperation Center (hereinafter referred to as the BRICS Center).
In February 2025, the Ministry of Commerce officially approved the establishment of the BRICS Center in Zhejiang. Focusing on the previous consensus on BRICS economic and trade cooperation and responding to the expectations of BRICS countries, the BRICS Center will strive to carry out work in seven aspects, including policy exchanges, deepening economic and trade cooperation, strengthening capacity building, enhancing standard alignment, and advancing institutional innovation. It is hoped that through 3-5 years of efforts, the BRICS Center will be built into an important position for economic and trade cooperation and exchanges between China and BRICS countries, an important window serving the development of enterprises in "going global" and "bringing in", an important engine for enhancing coordinated linkage, complementary advantages and cooperation promotion, and an important source of boosting the innovative development of BRICS special economic zones, becoming a new platform serving the in-depth advancement of high-level institutional opening-up.
