Ghana is promoting port reforms to improve logistics efficiency and build a regional logistics hub.

According to a report by "Photo Online" on January 19th, the Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA) is advancing regulatory and infrastructure reforms to align with the government's 24-hour economy policy and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda, aiming to enhance trade and logistics efficiency and help Ghana develop into a regionally competitive logistics hub.

Efficient port operations are a crucial support for the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy. The round-the-clock economic operation relies on predictable costs, efficient customs clearance, and a reliable logistics system. Although Ghana has implemented extensive macroeconomic reforms, issues such as inefficient port operations and high fees still put pressure on shippers. In response, the GSA has strengthened regulatory intervention, promoting pricing transparency among shipping and service providers and ensuring the implementation of approved freight rates in accordance with regulations. Through cooperation with ports, shipping, and terminal operators, it has achieved results in shortening cargo turnaround time and optimizing stakeholder coordination.

The GSA's reform strategy also includes two major pillars: First, investing in logistics infrastructure and digital platforms. Flagship projects such as the Boankra Inland Port (BILT) and the Akatakyie Freight Village can effectively relieve port congestion and improve the national freight network. Second, giving priority to digital transformation. By leveraging digital platform operations, system integration, and data-driven decision-making, it can reduce human intervention, curb rent-seeking behavior, and improve service efficiency.

In addition, the GSA cooperates with the African Shippers' Council Alliance, the Economic Community of West African States, and other global trade institutions to coordinate trade standards and safeguard the rights and interests of Ghanaian shippers in the African continental market. Through continuous stakeholder engagement and policy coordination, the GSA's intervention measures will significantly reduce the cost of doing business and enhance Ghana's status as the preferred trade and logistics hub in West Africa.
