Ghana has been elected as the Chair of the Kimberley Process for 2026-2027, becoming the first country in West Africa to hold this position.

According to a report by "News Ghana" on November 25, at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Plenary Meeting of the Kimberley Process (KP), Ghana was officially elected as the Vice-Chair country in 2026 and the Chair country in 2027, becoming the first West African country to hold this position since the establishment of the Kimberley Process. This election marks the international community's high recognition of Ghana's reform achievements in the field of mineral governance. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established in 2003 to prevent the trade of "conflict diamonds" through an international certification mechanism. The diamond trade volume of its member countries accounts for over 99% of the global total. After the election, Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Minerals Commission, said that this would endow Ghana with the significant responsibility of leading the global diamond industry towards more transparent and responsible development. He stated that Ghana would apply its reform experience in mineral governance to promote the further improvement of this certification system. It is reported that Ghana will make work preparations during its tenure as the Vice-Chair country in 2026 and officially preside over all the work of the Kimberley Process in 2027. This tenure will provide a new opportunity for African countries to play a more important role in the global diamond governance system.
