Ireland's food industry needs to increase investment in research and development
According to a report in The Irish Times on June 18th, the annual innovation forum for the Irish food industry was held in the capital city of Dublin on Tuesday. Irish Minister of Agriculture Martin Heydon pointed out at the meeting that as an industry of strategic importance in Ireland, the R & D investment of Irish food and beverage enterprises only accounts for about 0.7% of their turnover, far lower than the 1% target set by the government in its "Food Vision 2030" strategy and also far lower than that of other economic sectors. Heydon said that the Ministry of Agriculture has invested 56 million euros in food research to help enterprises reduce the risks of R & D, but "ultimately, innovation requires enterprises to make investments and prioritize R & D and innovation."
