South Sudan advocates for a one-stop border trade project
According to a report from African newspapers on January 5, 2026, Atong, the Minister of Trade and Industry of South Sudan, recently met with Kuol, the Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority, to jointly promote the implementation of the "One-Stop Border Post" (OSBP) project. The project has received a financial support of $10.8 million from the European Union and is planned to be constructed at the Nimule border crossing for a period of four years. The United Nations Office for Project Services and the African Brands Association will provide technical and infrastructure assistance.
The OSBP aims to integrate border management functions, simplify customs and immigration procedures, and significantly reduce the waiting time for cross-border transportation and the paperwork burden. The project design includes a climate-adaptive administrative building and a small-scale trading market for female and youth entrepreneurship. It is expected to effectively promote the flow of goods and strengthen trade links along the Cairo - Khartoum - Juba - Kampala corridor.
South Sudan has long been constrained by high trade costs and weak infrastructure. The government regards this project as a key measure to promote regional integration and boost the economy. The two sides have agreed to conduct a joint on-site inspection before the end of January 2026 to further coordinate the project's progress.
