The EU plans to impose additional tariffs on the US, targeting Boeing, chemicals, and agricultural products to pressure trade negotiations.

According to a report in The Irish Times on May 8th, aircraft manufacturers, chemical producers, and some agricultural products will be among the targets of the European Commission's proposed additional tariffs on goods imported from the United States.

The European Commission will publish a list of US products on Thursday. If trade negotiations fail, the EU will impose import tariffs on these products. The European Commission is trying to increase pressure on the US government by expanding the scope of US goods subject to import tariffs.

EU member states have already reached an agreement on imposing preliminary tariffs on 21 billion euros worth of US products, such as soybeans, motorcycles, oranges, clothing, and steel. These tariffs have been postponed until mid-July to allow time for negotiations.

The EU has been seeking an agreement with the US government to revoke the comprehensive tariffs imposed by Trump. If negotiations with Trump fail to reach an agreement, the European Commission is prepared to announce a second batch of proposed retaliatory tariffs, which will take effect simultaneously with the first batch.

It is reported that US aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing will be among the targets of the next batch of proposed tariffs. Chemicals and some agriculture-related commodities are also expected to be targeted, and the US automotive industry may also be a target.

It is expected that in the coming days and weeks, governments and industries will submit opinions on these proposals to the European Commission. Subsequently, EU countries will vote to approve the final package of temporary tariffs. (Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ireland)
